Morality has been one of the Philippines' number one issue today. It is a very broad field touching almost all aspects in the society- be it poverty, justice, power, equality or religion. now in the 21st century, is morality still valued by the people? Is morality still carried at everyones' heart?
MORALITY BY DEFINITION
Morality according to the Webster's dictionary is a moral or right conduct, practice or teachings. it speaks of a system of behavior regarding to the behavior; (2) moral responsibility, which refers to our conscience; (3) and the moral identity, one who knows right from wrong. it has the common synonyms of virtue, justice, goodness and uprightness.
MORALITY IN THE PHILIPPINES
Giving credit to the definition given above, morality describes the principles that govern our behavior. It guides us or our course of actions. Since childhood, we have been told by our dear parents to always do good and act right. We were taught on how to be disciplined. Even in school, since nursery, kindergarten and especially during elementary, good morals and right conduct were always reminded to us by our dear teachers. But what happened to these values upon reaching secondary school? Students in these years tend to be more carefree and they want to do things their way. They crave for independence and freedom leading to rebelliousness and loss of values if their desires weren't considered by their families. Does that mean that growing up at the same time losing the virtues come at the same time? What happened to the manners that were ought to be followed by heart?
Their was once a teenage boy that was known in the neighborhood to be a thief since he was young. He had been caught many times and been to jail for many times too. He is always making promises not to do the crime again but still endures to repeat the act many time. He was asked why he's doing such thing at a very young age where in fact he still have his parents? He was questioned of not being taught of choosing right from wrong. Then he answered "Are morals more important than the needs that I have to fulfill? You are lucky because you have your parents that can provide your necessities. But what about me? My siblings?" His resemblance was too pitiful that he doesn't have the parents who are good providers. But it conferred to a realization that we can't put the blame to the parents. The family's suffering from poverty affecting not only the family's stand of morality but also the perspective of each family member.
Crime statistics shows that as of year 2007, 65,944 crimes were committed or 115.6 crimes per 100,000 population and 17.4% of these were because of robbery. That's according to the PNP records. The cause of robberies were primarily caused by POVERTY.
So in the minds of most people and of the Filipinos, fighting against hunger is better than having an integrity with an empty stomach. That there are more important things to consider than just being in line of doing good and upright. But isn't it easier to consider fighting against poverty and following morals? Than being able to commit crime and unrighteousness because we wanted to achieve our wants and needs? It's like cheating during exams to get a high grade the same way easier to study hard to get high grades. If we just work hard, there will be mountains hard enough to climb and trials that we can't survive. If we'd just work on our faith in God, live up our religion to help us to take the right path of doing the good way and at the end, we might get what we want and it might be greater than we'd expect.
What's your stand of MORALITY as a FILIPINO ?

It's indeed great of you to infer such insights, its great to open our eyes to the reality of what's happening in our country today. May it be to the youth or to us adults which mostly until now, still dont know how to choose right from wrong.
ReplyDeleteim amazed that our blog is connected with each other.. lolz..
ReplyDeleteits great that the youth nowadays, eventhough were in the modern world already, we still take objections when morality is the topic already. But sad to say, majority of the teens living the foreign countries believe otherwise than what we are thinking..
It's true that morality is teached by our parents and teacher's at school. We have to review on every actions that we have to do because maybe in the end, we might regret it. Like me for instance, I got pregnant at the age of 16 and gave birth to a child without any guidance of my parents. I didn'y expect that I have a lot of sacrifices ahead of me waiting. I take that as a challenge and continue my studies to be able to attain my goals and dreams in life. I made my way right to prove to everyone that having a child is not a hindrance at all.
ReplyDeletehaving this kind of inter action is really needed... especially this hi tech age.. we can have this as a very good reminder not only for the youth but for everybody as well......
ReplyDeleteyouth of today is a real opposite of yesterday... hoping that despite of high technology..youth should not forget "MORALITY". Also praying that parents will always remind their children to be descent and respectful.."to fight poverty is not to forget morality"
ReplyDeleteCOMPUTER AGE (access to liberalization)... YES, if we parents will not guide our children..INTERNET, COMPUTER GAMES should we say THE ADVANCE TECHNOLOGY( most of the time morality is forgotten)..really ruins or destroy the future of our children if not well guided by the parents.
ReplyDeleteits one part of my daily routine to surf the internet. its so sad, that many young people use this means to make money, one of that is to show their body naked basta maka kwarta.. meaning Morality is no longer part of their vocabulary. We could not say that their doing it because of poverty..but most of them have been doing it because of worldly wants... so happy having this site.. at least may kabuluhan naman yong pag internet natin..sharing good insights..
ReplyDeleteMORAL ISSUE is really a big question nowadays. Many are using POVERTY as the reason for doing such immorality... ika nga HAWAK SA PATALIM.... Then, who's to blame the government or the church?????
ReplyDeleteI still do believed in good morality, maybe that is one of the reason that i reached this age staying single. Conservatism for women is still playing a big role in my life.. Maganda talaga kung ang lalaki ang manligaw...
ReplyDeleteAs a PASTOR, MORALITY is one of the words that we kept on preaching to people that is doing the right thing.. SO as people of GOD we should not forget MORALITY. CONGRATULATIONS CHA, for creating this blog... Keep it up..
ReplyDeleteBecause i valued morality, despite hardships, i want to make sure that my children will grow with high morale.Parents should be responsible enough to make them grow with integrity and most especially with love of God.
ReplyDeleteMy mom is working abroad.. And being away from my mom and as a student, i am lucky to have my grandpa, grandma, uncles and aunts who guide me to right path.. My mom provided all my needs but still she managed to monitor my activities here in the philippines, seeing to it that i will grow with love and respect to elders and especially with love to my parents.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this site..its good that we could have a topic to share with..A topic that could remind us that we are FILIPINOS trained to have high morale..huwag nating kalimutan ang tinuro ng ating mga ninuno..RESPETO, at ang pagiging CONSERVATIBO...maganda pa rin tinuro ang pagkamodelo ni MARIA CLARA
ReplyDeleteAs the technology advancement arise, the behavioral traits of the young Filipino arises also.(always wanted for an instant access) morality nowadays vanish due to their wants and needs in life. to all the Filipino youths out there i just want to remind you all that it is not bad to adopt the advancement of technology but be sure to have its limitation. God gave us our brain to think we have the distinction between good and evil. " DO NOT LET YOUR MIND RULED OVER YOUR HEART "
ReplyDeletealay poverty kung kita tanan mag-share.
ReplyDelete"walay pobre ra kaayo nga walay ikahatag, walay adunahan ra kaayo nga wala nay gikinahanglan"
i appreciate how you stand for great values .. i mean .. nowadays our good customs are rarely seen . im talking about the filipino youth today .. you know.. saying po and opo is so uncool ..and its really sad .. knowing that our country is known for its conservative attitudes but then its so ironic.. why? bec. our teenage-parenthood standing is really high ..
ReplyDelete:(( we are influence by many foreigners .. which i think is a bad thing , lots of us forget to appreciate our own fashion and lifestyle.. because. everyone wants to be "IN".
urgh! ...
we should pratice and re-establish our good moral values .. because it is one of the factor for us to schieve progress :))
nice job girls ..
YUP...FILIPINO is very rich with good culture, carrying good values.. Nakakapanghinayang pag ito ay ating makalimutan, because filipinos are known for being magalang.. For the parents sana we will not forget to remind and to re-educate our children of the good values sa pamilya nangagaling ang mapayapang bayan..
ReplyDeleteIm very impressed to those youths who show their care for their country by wanting to be heard through methods such as blogging. I agree that we should use modern devices in a way that can positively benefit mankind.
ReplyDeleteTo shed a light in the topic of morality, it is indeed a significant issue in our country and it is a popularly used defencs in debates because it builds up cases that surely nobody will stand to object when we talk about the positivity of morality. This clearly proves that morality is something to be taken seriously.
And since Filipinos are widely known as the race who values the merits of morality highly we are expected to act appropraitely and with decency so as not to commit a deed that will taint the national laws.
But unfortunately and inevitably, we still commit treacherous acts, neglecting morality to our fellowmen and to our country and the primary reason for this is poverty. The catalyst of crime commitment.
I can't even blame these people. They are faced with such complicated dillemas. It's like the all-or-nothing case, only for them it's do-or-die.
Courteously speaking, if you ask me, I'd say despite the problems our country faces we should never abolish the presence of morality in our heart.
But reality check is, morality can't feed these people's hungry stomach or can't provide them their other basic needs or even proper education.
My stand for morality is that the goverment should be enlightened with this seemingly new idea for them that they may inspire the people to act the same way.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for letting us know on what's your stand of morality as a FILIPINO and specially to us ateneans who are expected to keep track of the values of St. Ignatius and St. Francis Xavier. Not just to us students but also as the youth whom our elders believe that we are the hope for the better future.. So much for that, I thank You and may you continue to sjow us that you care for your values and principles lived us a person, Filipino and as children of God.. Good Noon :D
ReplyDeleteThe value of morality was presented in a simple way yet it could give a big impact to the readers. I, myself, I love this blog. The simplicity made me stop to think of my current status and stand for morality.
ReplyDeleteMORALITY????!!!! Morality now adays are very degrading, especially among teenagers. Due to high technology of today, younger children even at the age of two knows how to manipulate computers, cellphones, video cams, etc. With these, without parental guidance younger children tend to copy or immitate what they have heard or seen. In short parents plays a vital role in molding MORALITY.
ReplyDeletegreat job...likee it
ReplyDeletePhilippines' morality is VERY SICK. Very very sick. It has Cancer -- Stage Four-- Urgently, it needs, DIALYSIS-- It is BARELY surviving at the ICU.
ReplyDeleteDiagnosis: of broken families -- adolescents, just after their puberty stage are having children of their own-- product of extra-marital sex; gross corruption of officers who hold a supposedly respectable positions in the government; cyber sex-- for wanting of money for survival, annulment of marriage here and there for as long as you have the thousands in your pocket and right connections.
Very complicated disease. The ultimate hope is a MIRACLE.
i realy liked the topic about morality.. . .
ReplyDeletei admit i realy got hit by this blog. . .
but still it is blatant enough that many are still doing it. . .
people say that "its better to cheat than to repeat."
it is common in the milieu of the philippines because poverty still dominate.
I like this BlogSpot because it has a nice topic on how people choose between right and wrong. But I hate the way it discriminate the morality of Filipino. Though it is correct (due to poverty)but not all, still other Filipino choose to do right rather than to sacrifice ones dignity.
ReplyDeleteMorality is an important virtue that one must establish on his own. If one does value it, even at certain life and death situations , he or she can do what's right. And that what matters most, doin the right thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm struck by the story of the teenage thief you've included in your blog. That was really a sad truth. There's no one to blame actually, but honestly we somehow question why we are in this state and why we have to suffer difficulties in life and make tough decisions. Well, that's life and it's a matter of conviction of oneself. Let us evaluate ourselves why we are this and taht. After all, in the end it's our decision that counts and would either bring us to the right or wrong path.
But above all these, it is reallt important to value morality. I am a Filipino, and by being one, morality is indeed a value to be practiced and put into action.
thanks for the blog. you have a good follpowing, huh?
ReplyDeletecongrats. keep blogging/./.
Filipino Morality nowadays are being immoral, because of poverty they tend to steal foods for their sake which is wrong to the eye of our God and our law. I hope Filipino parent's to preach or advise their children about morality and elude immoral actions.
